Summer Travel Quickie

‘Tis the season to take to the road… or the rail… or the air… or the water.  However you travel, and wherever you go, here are some super simple ideas to take along to make your vacation fun.

We all know it’s great to tuck in a game or magazine somewhere handy.  Think of it as “insurance.”  Without it, there will surely be some long periods of “hurry up and wait.”

Keep a camera handy… never in a bag that is out of reach.  Digital cameras make it easy to snap away like mad, without the expense or time of film developing.

Oh, and have you seen the sunglasses that also record video?!?  These are a hoot-and-a-half.  Seriously, check out products like Air Venturi Video Recorder Sunglasses.  You could spend up to $100 though, so it’s a pretty expensive “extra.”

Be sure to include items like motion sickness medication, insect repellent, sunscreen, and bottled water.  Like a good scout, you want to be prepared.

Mark your luggage boldly, to help you spot it easily AND to deter theft.  Attach brightly color scarves or bandanas or reflective ribbons and such.

If you are flying, a small, extremely light-weight, portable scale is super to pack.  They are designed for luggage and should cost you less than $20 for a good one that can handle up to 75 or 80 pounds.  This helps avoid some VERY hefty fees if you happen to show up at the airport with an overweight bag!

We always like to include some dried fruit, nuts, and trail mix, when we are not sure if we’ll get easy access to fresh foods.

Here’s a Super Simple recipe to get you started… it’s healthy, tasty, and fast!

Almond Snack Mix

1/2 c whole almonds (raw or roasted, salted or plain)

2/3 c cereal squares, such as corn chex

1/2 c low-fat granola cereal  (with or without raisins, as suits your preference)

1/4 c dried apricot halves, cut into strips

1/4 c golden raisins

1/4 c dried cranberries (sweetened with apple juice are superb)

Mix all the ingredients together and store in airtight containers or zip-top style plastic bags.

You’ll find more great snack ideas including Super Simple Pepperoni Crisps, Cathy’s Perfect Party Mix, Super Simple Pita Crisps, and Perfect Poppy Cock, among others in our cookbook Fifty Years of Fabulous Family Favorites.

Travel with a smile on your face and do return safely!
